This book addresses the modern issues of bioethics, science and society through an analysis of the Eugenics Study of Vermont conducted in 1925 by Zoology professor Henry Perkins.The author emphasizes that ironically, in a state with a motto of freedom and unity, reports of the study were used to support social reforms like the Vermont Sterilization law of 1931, which stated that
Henceforth it should be the policy of the state to prevent procreation of idiots, imbeciles, feebleminded or insane persons
. The term eugenics was originally coined by Charles Darwin's nephew, Francis Galton, in the 1890's.
