Abstract:
This booklet, designed for grades K-4, contains a story and activities about magnetism. The booklet begins with a story about a boy who is given some lodestones, rocks with magnetic properties. Throughout the story the boy learns about the properties of the lodestones and eventually uses the stones to solve a problem. After the story there are activities with blackline masters for teachers to use in their classroom. Included with these activities are listed objectives and references to national science education standards that are related to these activities. At the end of the booklet there is a magnet assessment with answer key.
One of the activities in this booklet asks students to work with magnets and experiment with placing different magnetic poles next to each other. A blackline master worksheet guides students through the activity. It asks them to think critically as they consider why the magnetic force cannot be seen and as they relate what they saw to the story. (Author/MTL)
