Abstract: This book, written for K-12 teachers and administrators, discusses various facets of assessment, including terminology, standardized tests, portfolios, rubrics, and alternative/traditional tests. The authors intend for readers to comprehend basic terminology, to learn how to write rubrics, as well as to understand the purposes and functions of standards and benchmarks. The book begins with a definition of assessment accompanied by ten basic purposes of assessment. These include planning instruction, comparing student progress, motivating students, and holding schools accountable. Readers then learn and/or review basic assessment vocabulary and an overview of standards and benchmarks. Subsequent chapters use bulleted lists and examples for the various assessment types. The last 70 pages provide readers with teacher-generated rubrics and other evaluation forms. (Author/AJC)
