Abstract: This professional development book, created for grades K to 4, explores what would happen if the son of the big bad wolf decided to use simple machines to catch the daughters of the three little pigs. The book intends to be both an entertaining and an educational way of presenting information on simple machines. It begins with the a story of the wolf using a pulley to get into the pig's house made of straw, a ramp to get into the pig's house made of sticks, and a crowbar to get into the pig's house made of bricks. Black-and-white cartoons supplement the text. Following the story is a section of student activities that relate to the special machines mentioned in the story. One activity allows students to discover how a wedge and gear work in a can opener. Students use their fingers to act out the teeth of a wheel that fit together to make the gears turn. Thinking questions, such as 'How are gears used at an amusement park?' and 'If one gear moves clockwise, what direction does the connected gear move?' accompany each activity. An assessment is provided to determine student understanding of all the simple machines. Pages are reproducible but limited to the number of students in the classroom. (Author/ALK)
