Abstract: This book, written for grades 3-12 teachers, provides sample activities and assessments along with planning strategies for differentiated instruction. Topics are taken from history, mathematics, science, and language arts. The book begins with an overview of differentiated instruction. Six facets of differentiation are described, including ability levels, ways of learning, and varying amounts of time to complete work. Much of the material is then organized into three main sections: Tic-Tac-Toe Student Choice Activities, Individual Lesson Plans, and Tiered Lessons. The Tic-Tac-Toe approach requires the teacher to develop a game board from which students select three projects in a row. Appropriately placing project choices in the squares can insure against students selecting only easy tasks and can aid the teacher in addressing standards. The book provides game boards for various topics. Individualized Lesson Plans require students to perform three specific tasks and then complete two additional activities of their choice. Forms are included for several topics on which teachers can record due dates and choices made by students. The student choices are often organized according to Bloom's Taxonomy and types of intelligences. Tiered Lesson Plans are presented as more suitable for classrooms of mixed ability levels. For each sample topic, suggestions are given for three different levels of ability. Assessments are also included. The book is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing a pdf version of the text as well as Microsoft Word documents that teachers can adapt for their own classrooms. (Author/AJC)
