Abstract: This question-and-answer book is designed to help students understand the fundamental concepts of high school geometry. This book is part of the MATH FORUM series which answers mathematical questions sent to the Ask Dr. Math web site; Dr. Math is a team of mathematicians, teachers, college students, and professionals from the mathematics community. Topics include logic and proof, triangles, and polygons. The scope of the book emulates a geometry course. Each chapter of the book provides an overview of the geometric concepts, tips for students, and questions and answers about geometry concepts. The questions, taken from those actually submitted by students to the Math Forum web site, are followed by answers, explanations, and examples that reinforce the concepts. The book also contains suggestions for studying geometry, a glossary of terms, and a list of web resources that provide additional information about the topics.
As an example of the material, the chapter on circles begins with examples of the uses of circles in the world as well as definitions and diagrams of the parts of a circle. One section in this chapter focuses on tangents and contains six questions for Dr. Math related to this topic. One question asks: If two circles with radii of length nine and six are two centimeters apart, how do you find the length of the common internal tangent? Each question is answered in letter format, including explanations, illustrations, and formulas as needed. (Author/JHH/FAM/DKK)
