Chemical reactions. Chemistry. Physical Science.
Lessons and activities; Teacher guides.
This instructional guide, developed for high school teachers, contains five experiments and five demonstrations for exploring the nature of equilibrium. It is part of the FLINN CHEMTOPIC LABS series, which offers laboratory guides that are developed and tested by master teachers who are familiar with what experiments best facilitate concept development. Experiments in this book explore reversible reactions, the equilibrium constant, Le Chatelier's principle, and complex-ion reactions. Demonstrations expand on these concepts, as well as encourage students to consider photochemistry and gas solubility. Each experiment provides teacher notes and student handouts, which introduce the concepts, outline the procedures, and offer reproducible data tables. Added sections for teachers provide a solution preparation guide, sample data, safety guidelines, and answers to all questions, in addition to presenting detailed laboratory hints, teaching tips for conducting the experiment, and a list of possible student misconceptions and errors. Tables in the back of the book correlate the content to national standards and delineate the amount of each chemical needed in each experiment or demonstration.
In one experiment, students determine the equilibrium constant for the reaction of iron (III) ions with thiocyanate ions. Students test the reaction under different conditions to determine the equilibrium constant. Next, the absorbance of a reference and a test solution is measured with colorimetry to determine the unknown concentration of the complex ion in the test solution. (Author/JAT)
