Abstract: This textbook, developed for students in high school, explores chemistry. Chapters focus on fundamental concepts, ranging from atoms to states of matter to oxidation-reduction chemistry. Each chapter opens with review questions and a start-up activity and ends by highlighting one element. Side notes within chapters emphasize key vocabulary words, as well as direct students to relevant information and homework help on the Internet. An assessment review and standardized practice test questions conclude each chapter. Most chapters also offer a quick investigation that aids students in the application of particular concepts. The laboratory experiments section provided in the back of the book examines concepts more in-depth. Resources in the appendix include a list of study skills, a chemical reference handbook, and additional practice problems. The available teacher's edition correlates the content to national standards, as well as offers a differentiated planning guide for each chapter. Lesson support is displayed around minimized student pages and provides educators with teaching tips, discussion suggestions, short in-class activities, and demonstrations. The text is also available online, in CD-ROM format, and in Spanish.
One chapter on matter and energy opens with review questions that ask students to asses their prior knowledge before starting the chapter. In the start-up activity, students investigate the energy released during oxidation of the iron in steel wool. The element spotlight highlights the importance of helium to deep-sea diving.
