Abstract: This activity book and CD are designed to provide middle school mathematics teachers with engaging student activities using The Geometer's Skechpad software. Developed from the philosophy that students should discover for themselves the ideas and relationships of geometry, the materials may be used as the basis for an independent geometry unit or as activities to reinforce and enrich students' understanding of geometry concepts. Each of the seven units contains a series of activities and projects that develop students' familiarity with an interrelated set of geometry concepts, such as types of quadrilaterals or the properties of transformations. In the activities, students explore particular concepts within a framework. However, in the projects, students can perform a more freeform investigation. Teacher notes describe the concepts involved in each activity, list prerequisite Sketchpad skills, and present essential vocabulary, in addition to providing detailed demonstration instructions and solutions.
The activities in the unit on transformations ask students to examine translations and rotations, both freehand and on a coordinate grid, and then work on reflections and dilations. Over the course of these activities, students define essential vocabulary terms and concepts for themselves. For one of the unit's projects, students create a sketch that includes all of the types of transformations described. They also use transformations to compare different golden rectangles. A quick reference guide to the Sketchpad maneuvers used in the activities and projects accompanies each unit. (Author/RMK/FAM)
