Abstract: This textbook, developed for students in middle school, explores characteristics of the atmosphere. It is part of the HOLT SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SHORT-COURSE series, which divides the science education curriculum into smaller, easy-to-handle textbooks. Each chapter opens with pre-reading and start-up activities. Sections within chapters begin with a reading strategy to help students organize and remember information. Numerous side notes within chapters highlight key concepts, direct students to relevant information on the Internet, and connect the content to other subject areas. An assessment review, standardized practice test questions, and a science in action excerpt conclude each chapter. Most chapters also end with a skills practice or inquiry investigation. The end of the book offers study skills and a math refresher. Also, the teacher's edition correlates the content to national standards, as well as offers a planning guide for each chapter. Lesson support, displayed around minimized student pages, provides educators with teaching strategies, reinforcement ideas, and extensions. A Spanish version of the book is also available.
One chapter on climate opens with a pre-reading activity that suggests students create a pyramid out of paper. On the three sides of the pyramid, students identify the three climate zones and their related characteristics. The start-up activity directs students to investigate how the angle of the sun's rays affects the temperature of Earth. Students shine a light on a globe that has thermometers attached at two different places. In the investigation at the end of the chapter, students interpret climatographs in order to identify the climate patterns for each biome. (Author/JAT)
