Abstract: This book, created as a professional development tool for environmental educators, provides information on how to formulate interpersonal skills and foster awareness when working with culturally diverse colleagues and audiences. The book uses 10 case studies to detail problems with and solutions to cultural differences affecting environmental education. Each case study is supplemented with reflective commentary from an educator who had a similar experience with the presented issues. In addition, facilitation notes offer thought-provoking questions to help the reader explore their own perceptions. A separate chapter offers the designated facilitator instructions for how to use the book, and a chart is included that shows the issues covered by each case, such as interagency collaboration and cultural dissonance.
One chapter highlights how a teacher, new to an African school, struggled with biophobia. Commentary from a 20-year veteran of international schools explains the economic, social, and cultural differences that were interpreted as biophobia by the protagonist. The facilitation notes then pose questions about teaching stewardship to those with different cultural backgrounds. (Author/ALK)
