Abstract: This activity book, written for grades 3-6, contains 25 fill-in-the-blank play scripts that provide practice in numerical operations, measurement, data analysis, and problem-solving. The goal of the book is to provide problem-solving opportunities through the acting out of famous fables and Greek myths. Approximately half of the plays focus on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The remaining plays combine those operations with other mathematical topics such as mean and median. The stories include Cinderella, The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, Odysseus and the Cyclops, and Daedalus the Bird Man. Each page has space for performing calculations; solutions are provided at the end of the text.
As a sample of the material, the following line is said by the witch in the Hansel and Gretel playscript: Now, I have lit the fire in my special oven which takes 3/4 hours to heat properly. Go quickly and get more wood. If I add twice as much wood, the oven will heat in 1/3 of the time or (blank) hours. The students fill in the blank by calculating the number of hours. (Author/AJC)
