Abstract: This professional development guide, designed for grades K-12 teachers, parents, and students, provides practical activities that encourage the development of active and passive questioning. Users are first introduced to the importance of questioning as a way to avoid mistakes, improve study skills, and expand thinking. Activities encourage the development of quantity, compare/contrast, emotion, what if, and how come questioning techniques. Background information and various examples are first presented for each type of question. Later parts of the example activities provide graphic organizers or diagrams for students to devise their own questions about a designated topic or a topic of choice.
For example, one section introduces students to basic recall, convergent, rigid, 'skinny' questions, and more complex divergent, open-ended, 'fat' questions. One of the activities presents 14 key words that can be found in 'fat' questions. An introductory example directs students to circle the 'fat' words that appear in the 10 sample questions. Students conclude the activity by writing 'fat' questions of their own using the key words. A reference list is provided at the end of the guide. (Author/JAT)
