Abstract: This book teaches students about the physics of light and sound and how humans have employed them to experience the world. The book is part of the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC READING EXPEDITIONS: LIFE SCIENCE series which uses readers to assist young students in the exploration of fundamental principles in physical sciences. This book teaches students about the components of ecosystems and describes how these components interact. This book is part of the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC READING EXPEDITIONS: LIFE SCIENCE series which uses readers to assist students in the exploration of fundamental biological principles. Color photographs accompany the text and help to describe ecosystems, including the soil, plants, animals, water, and the many processes that link an environment together. The book also compares and contrasts the ecosystems of ponds, prairies, deserts, and forests. Students will read about the organisms that have adapted to fit their respective ecosystem and may not survive in another ecosystem. The book points out that organisms fill specific niches within ecosystems and that changes in populations may disrupt the food chain. The book also explains that the food chain consists of producers, consumers, and decomposers, providing specific examples of each. A food web is diagrammed and demonstrates the interrelationships of plants, herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores. In one activity, students pretend they are a component of an ecosystem and must write about where their energy comes from. Supplemental materials include a glossary, an index, and a list of print and internet resources for further investigation. (Author/JS)
