This book is a collection of activities for use with students in grades 3 and 4 to develop their number sense and arithmetic skills. The students use judgments based on their understanding of mathematical relationships presented in prose and draw conclusions from the stated relationships. This book consists of 80 stories that address topics in numeration; arithmetic of integers, fractions, and decimals; geometry; and measurement. In each activity students are given a set of four numbers and must logically work out which number goes in which blank in order for the story to make sense. Teaching suggestions, solutions, and blackline masters are included.
One activity tells the story of the Empire State Building, with blanks in place of numbers that the students must fill in from choices provided. The numbers correspond to the date it was built, the building's height, the number of floors, and its height including the television tower. Each page has four thematically related stories that focus on such areas as physical and natural sciences, history, government, geography, architecture, fine art, and sports. (Author/MM)
Table of Contents:
1. Numeration to hundred thousands and basic facts
2. Addition and subtraction up to four-digit numbers
3. Multiplication and division
4. Decimals, fractions, geometry measurement
