Abstract: This kit consists of the third grade materials for the second edition of the Math Trailblazers curriculum program. Math Trailblazers is a researchbased K to 5 mathematics program that incorporates science and language arts. The program makes a strong effort toward alignment with the NCTM standards both in content and in organization. It encourages multiplesolution strategies for problem solving. According to the authors, the program accommodates a range of student abilities and promotes discussion as students cooperatively refine their ideas and learn from one another. The curriculum is composed of 20 units, each with its own Unit Resource Guide (URG). The URG provides lesson plans, including goals, student activities, materials lists, homework activities, assessments, and teaching suggestions. The Teacher Implementation Guide, which serves as the reference manual for Math Trailblazers, supplements the URG by addressing larger issues related to the curriculum, including assessment. The Student Guide is the core student text and contains lessons, discussion questions, and problems. The Adventure Book offers collections of illustrated stories and comes in both a regular and a large size. The Discovery Assignment Book is a student workbook with games and activities that complement the Student Guide. Other components include a set of blackline masters, a transparency package, and letters home. This level emphasizes measurement, estimation, and problem solving throughout the year. It covers a wide range of mathematics topics including numbers, number relationships, and simple computation. (Author/KFR/FAM)
