Abstract: This video uses interviews with current mathematicians to offer a view of what is wonderful about math and what it is like to be a mathematician. People interviewed include Freeman Dyson, Persi Diaconis, Peter Sarnak, and Kate Okikiolu among others. The interviewees describe important points in their lives with relation to mathematics and what they do on a day-to-day basis now. The mathematicians particularly emphasize the difficulties of research in math and the immense pleasure they get from thinking deeply and solving problems. One of the major unsolved problems, the Riemann hypothesis, is described, as is the idea of rigorous proof and the role it plays in mathematics. The mathematicians also discuss the connections of advanced mathematics to the real world. Some of the concepts discussed are illustrated with computer graphics. (Author/FAM)
