Abstract: This learning tool is a desktop or hand-held digital video microscope that displays magnified images on any USB PC computer. Images are focused automatically and can be top lit or bottom lit for optimal viewing. Powered by the USB connection, the microscope can be fully portable if connected to a notebook computer. The accompanying software allows students to produce and display single-frame shots, video movies, and time-lapse photography at 10x, 60x, and 200x magnification. All icons emit different sounds when touched with the cursor, providing an auditory stimulus for the student. The user can browse the more than 200 images available on the CD-ROM, and an array of tools allows the user to manipulate and edit all the images. The curriculum guide contains 36 lessons that are correlated to the NSES. For example, in a lesson on fingerprinting, the students use ink to place their fingerprints on index cards. Using the microscope, they classify their fingerprint patterns and calculate class percentages for each type of fingerprint pattern. The students then apply this information to crime scene investigations and brainstorm other uses for fingerprints. (Author JG/KRG)
