Abstract: This kit reviews the basic concepts of chemistry. The resource is part of the GLENCOE SCIENCE CUSTOM CURRICULUM series, a 15-part series that allows teachers to select topics and assemble their own science curriculum. Teachers may select from among five life science, five Earth science, and five physical science topics. Each topic is provided as a kit that contains student and teacher versions of text, a student lab manual, and a host of teacher resources. These include a set of block-scheduled lesson plans, a standardized test practice manual, and chapter-specific resource guides. The resource guides contain reproducible student pages designed to support testing, hands-on activities, and in-class note taking. Resource guides also include content outlines that can serve as teaching notes, and Spanish resources.
The text for this kit investigates atomic bonding and reactions of organic and inorganic chemistry. Sample topics include ionic compounds, rates of reaction, solubility, pH, and simple organic compounds. The text is supported with photographs and diagrams from the National Geographic Society. Each chapter opens with a Foldable, a classroom activity that students complete using paper, pencil, and scissors, that helps them organize and learn new content. For example, the chapter on chemical reactions begins with the students creating a chart of questions and answers to help students quiz themselves. Additional activities in the chapter have students observe a reaction between baking soda and vinegar, balance chemical equations, and compare the reactivity of different metals. The teacher version includes teaching strategies, safety precautions, assessment ideas, answers to questions, and extension suggestions in the margins of the text. (Author/JEF)
