Abstract: This reference book from the National Geographic Society provides facts and content information on physical and life sciences. The easy-to-read format and real-world pictures help explain how science is involved in our daily lives. Divided into four areas, the book offers information in two physics sections ranging from entropy to electricity; a chemistry section including information on elements, pH, and carbons; and a biology section covering the topics of microbiology and biochemistry. Two pages are devoted to a topic, each with color pictures or diagrams and a text description of the topic.
For example, to illustrate the everyday application of friction, pictures of a person climbing a mountain and parachuting appear along side text that explains the basics of this force. Two small boxes also explain how friction is used to create fire and sound, while another box provides approximate static coefficients. All the sections are color coded and each individual topic lists page numbers of cross-referenced material. (Author/RKR)
