Abstract: This resource book for elementary teachers provides background information and interventions to help students with emotional disorders and learning disabilities. Chapters address the behaviors associated with each type of disorder or disability and describe how teachers can recognize early signs of these conditions. Child case studies lend additional insight and offer opportunities for readers to identify similar scenarios in their classrooms. There are also reproducible student worksheets and stories that assist teachers in implementing the various pedagogical strategies suggested in the book.
In one chapter, readers learn how emotional problems are often linked to learning disorders. The author explains how a child's cognitive deficits can actually be intensified if his or her coping methods interfere with learning. For example, emotional problems such as anxiety and hopelessness often lead to the avoidance of challenging material. A case study tells the story of Tami who frequently became overwhelmed with schoolwork. A suggested intervention involves the use of encouragement cards to help students persevere through difficult tasks. Cards, which have sayings such as You can do it! and Calm yourself are placed on students' desks throughout the day. (Author/JG)
