Abstract: This textbook, designed for use in a college-level introductory microbiology course, presents basic concepts of microbiology, with an emphasis on the biology of human disease. Topics include the variations in structure and growth of microorganisms, the basis for infectious disease and resistance, and the beneficial effects of microorganisms in human life. Each chapter begins with a historical perspective on the topics covered and contains a variety of text features designed to guide readers. These include To This Point sections, which are mid-chapter summaries; Micro Focus boxes, which explore various microbiology topics; and Summary Tables, which highlight the similarities and differences among topics discussed in the chapter. The book also contains numerous Textbook Cases that present contemporary disease outbreaks in pictorial format. Color photographs, diagrams, and charts are found throughout the book, along with a glossary of key terms. (Author/FCM/JG)
