Abstract: This professional development book presents strategies for using standards and assessments to support meaningful learning for all students. It explores issues related to assessment, accountability, and standards-based reform in the context of teaching for understanding and critical inquiry. The Heart of the Matter is based on the author's belief that standardized, high-stakes testing provides a limited view of students' proficiencies and their progress.
The first chapter explains how standardized testing rose to the position of prominence that it currently occupies in our education system. Subsequent chapters describe the use of standards-based performances, the problems related to the implementation of standards-based approach, and how to translate the standards-based approach into action. It also offers a rationale for making the standards a basis for professional learning. Tables, comparison charts, and samples of children's work are included to support the standards-based practices. The author concludes that a lack of understanding of the complexities of educational and societal issues or the lack of sense of empowerment keep people from being involved in school improvement issues. The author challenges readers to use their new understanding to become advocates for all children in the ongoing debate about creating meaningful educational experiences. References are included.
