Abstract: This videotape, developed for grades K through 4 as part of the ENERGY FOR CHILDREN series, explores ways in which energy can be conserved. Each 23-minute videotape in this 5-volume series provides basic scientific information about the five forms of energy including electromagnetic, chemical, and mechanical, as well as heat and nuclear energy. Emphasizing the necessity of energy conservation, this video encourages activities such as carpooling, bike riding, and turning off appliances when not in use. A teacher's guide offers a program summary, a glossary, and discussion points to use before and after viewing the videotape.
A segment of this tape features a hands-on activity that shows students how conservation works through the construction of a compost. Using materials such as dead leaves, dirt, and organic waste materials students observe and record the change in temperature and particle size over the course of several weeks. An additional investigation addresses how renewable resources such as wind, sun, and water are promising energy resources for the future. (Author/TMH)
