Abstract: This book, written for teachers and administrators, addresses the ways in which schools have been effective and ineffective in implementing inclusion programs. From understanding the logistical issues involved in program implementation to addressing students' academic and social needs, the authors provide a framework for educators to discuss, reflect on, and apply information on school change and inclusionary practices. Collaboration is emphasized as the key to reform in that it allows consideration of attitudes and beliefs, goal clarification, and reorganization of instruction. Throughout the text, school vignettes reinforce chapter concepts along with personal comments from teachers and principals.
A sample chapter, Lessons Learned, discusses the authors' findings during their ten years of school research. The power of influential supporters, necessity for wide scale change, and anticipation of unexpected outcomes are highlighted. Exemplifying situations include a school system that became inclusive after the retirement of an administrator and student acceptance of each other after teachers become more attentive to student conflict. Bulleted ideas, tables, and example boxes are used to organize concepts and a listing of related resources is provided for further reference. (Author/JG)
