This kit for grade 8 students, part of the MEGA PROJECTS series, contains fifty project cards where students use mathematics in an investigative problem solving process to explore ten interdisciplinary themes including the indirect measurement, geometric solids, and functions. The series, for grades 1 to 8, is designed to supplement the regular mathematics curriculum. Students problem solve and communicate about mathematics in real life settings. The project cards in each kit present questions for individuals or small groups to explore and give suggestions for getting started on projects dealing with data, patterns, and applications. Each grade level teacher guide suggests ways for organizing the activities and offers assessment ideas to help students reflect on how to improve their work, along with ideas to help teachers evaluate both student understanding and achievement.
In a sample project, Game Show Explorations, from this grade 8 kit, students use their knowledge of a coordinate graph to play a type of tic-tac-toe game. They use ordered pairs to identify points and develop strategies for maximizing the chance of getting four in a row. In other activities, students use number clues to deduce a mystery four-digit number, guess an area code and phone number using either an organized list or a matrix and deductive reasoning, and compute the probabilities in the lottery.
