Abstract: This videotape and accompanying teacher's guide, developed for grades 5 to 8 as part of the SPACE SCIENCE IN ACTION series, discusses how the Earth is different from the other planets in our solar system. The series is designed to support the National Science Content Standards for units on the structure of the Earth system, Earth's history and Earth in the solar system.
This program begins by discussing the importance of our location in the solar system, especially our advantageous distance from the sun. Students learn about the factors that allow life to flourish on Earth, including the water cycle and the composition of the planet. It also includes a visit to Biosphere Two in Arizona where students learn how scientists are studying future influences that may affect the earth's environment. The program also shows a hands-on activity in which students investigate the evaporation of salt water to explain why raindrops are not salty.
The teacher's guide provides a brief synopsis of the program, previewing and follow up questions and activities, and vocabulary, in addition to additional resources. In a sample follow up activity, students create a biosphere type environment in an empty two liter soda bottle. Students then relate what happens in the bottle to conditions and systems that can be found on the Earth. (Author/YK)
