Abstract:
This professional development manual on equity issues, developed by the Michigan Department of Education for use by teachers and education professionals, is intended as an accompanying training resource for the Michigan Curriculum Framework and Benchmarks. The manual is designed as a facilitator's guide that can be used to catalyze dynamic workshops and reflective self analysis. It features many discussion outlines and specific instructions for numerous group activities. The manual emphasizes the exploration of values and attitudes towards classroom equity through discourse. It also encourages readers or participants to construct their own understanding of how educators can connect with individual learners and help them to realize their full potential.
Topics discussed include examining beliefs, defining equity and exploring instructional strategies. The manual also examines model programs and explores ways to form partnerships with families and the community. In a sample activity, participants walk through an imaginary school and describe things they might see that could be indicators of, or barriers to, equity.
