Abstract:
This videotape, part of the PBS SCIENCELINE K to 5 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES, shows a teacher in his classroom modeling specific aspects of standards based instruction. The series is the result of a collaboration with the National Science Teachers Association. Its goal, through integration of video and online technologies, is to provide teachers with a forum in which they can get examples and ideas about how to implement the National Science Education Standards. This video contains two one half hour segments. The first segment shows how this teacher uses guided inquiry to help his students study botany. The students are given opportunities to express their misconceptions, make predictions, and collaborate to find the answers to their own questions. The teacher is seen recording notes on the students throughout the lesson. He feels that this has two benefits. First, he is modeling the importance of good data collection. Secondly, his notes give him the information he needs to evaluate his students' progress. The second segment highlights how this teacher integrates topics across the curriculum in his botany lesson. The students are seen incorporating math and music into their lesson when they make measurements of their plant heights and sing a song to conclude the lesson. The teacher discusses how inquiry methods have helped his students accomplish more than what he usually plans.
