Abstract: This textbook and teacher's edition are designed to provide students in grades 11 and 12 with a collections of real science issues pertaining to the environment. The curriculum in these books contains activities which reflect the problems and questions facing conservation biologists, politicians , economists, and citizens. Students read, answer thought provoking questions, formulate hypotheses, and conduct experiments. The hands-on activities include role playing and outdoor explorations of diversity in varied sites. Biodiversity, island biogeography, habitat fragmentation, and extinction are concepts that students integrate to their knowledge base when designing a nature reserve. Each lesson in the student book contains a summary, goal, learning objectives, and background information. In one lesson students explore the value of wildlife while answering the question, why conserve biological diversity? Students learn, in this lesson, the difference between natural and human caused extinction and explore the ways that humans rely upon and enjoy biological diversity. A graph shows the correlation between the exponential increase in extinction with the exponential increase in human population. The students then discuss questions having to do with the changes the students would experience in their lives if species diversity declined. They contemplate the objects in their homes that have come from living things, the relative impact if different animals became extinct, the fate of dead things if decomposing microorganisms were not in existence. The version of this chapter in the teacher's edition includes the expected duration of the lesson, prerequisite knowledge the students need, and additional background information. In preparation for the lesson, the teachers are told the handouts and overheads to prepare and an instructional strategy to follow. Extension activities, key terms, and addition resources for information are included in the teacher's edition. Each lesson has a test with an answer key. Case studies with answer keys are provided in the teacher's edition to accompany some lessons. Fish and Wildlife Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior reports about endangered species are found in the teachers book and contain taxonomic and ecological information about the animal as well as maps depicting their range. The teacher's edition contains the necessary handouts, overheads, and discussion questions. Teacher's tips are also offered. Teachers can build a conservation biology library with the suggested books, or they can visit the suggested World Wide Web sites in the teacher's edition. A glossary for scientific terms in found in both the student and teacher versions. (Author/JSR)
