Abstract: This textbook, designed for introductory meteorology course, helps students learn the basic concepts of meteorology along with applications. The book features flex text format, sections on weather folklore or commentary in each chapter, and focuses on optics in which students can find essays on such optical phenomena as the water on the dry road mirage. The contents feature explanations of visible, infrared and water vapor satellite imagery, an in depth treatment of Doppler radar, and a detailed discussion of cyclogenesis along with eight pages of color plates. Additional features include World Wide Web exercises as well as laboratory exercises at the end of each chapter. Also included are sections titled Applying Your Knowledge, Questions for Laboratory, and Questions for Review. For example, the chapter on Fronts and Cyclogenesis, students are encouraged to understand the structure of atmospheric fronts in light of a more detailed link to the upper air wind and vorticity patterns with rich black and white figures and diagrams of frontal anatomy and cyclogenesis. Upon completing this chapter, in the laboratory exercise section students draw isobars and isotherms, and predict the frontal passage based on the behavior of the pressure and the wind direction, provided with real data.
