Abstract: This teacher resource guide, part of the BOX IT OR BAG IT MATHEMATICS series, is designed to help teachers of grades 1 and 2 develop an activity-centered mathematics program by offering a year long plan with creative ideas for investigating patterns, measurement, place value, counting, and addition and subtraction. The series consists of two teacher resource guides and nine concept packets for primary teachers to use in creating a sensory-rich, interactive mathematics classroom. According to the authors, the series is organized around three strategies: Seasonal Mathematics and calendar activities provide regular experiences with key mathematical concepts; Concept Instruction provides direct whole group teaching strategies; and Enrichment Boxes (small cardboard boxes containing an activity or game related to a theme) provide opportunities for children to extend their learning, whether alone, with a partner, or in a small group during independent practice time. The program interweaves the three strategies to provide a varied daily environment for learning mathematics. The creation of Enrichment Boxes is central to the program outlined in this resource guide; included are details for their assembly along with suggestions for their effective used in the classroom. Examples of suggested program activities from the resource guide for grades 1 and 2 follow. In Seasonal Mathematics activities for November, students collect and sort leaves, concentrate on patterns as they make macaroni necklaces, create a construction paper quilt, hand print turkeys, and make up a fall-related story to act out as a class. Concept instruction for pattern includes lessons in which students work to develop an understanding of what a pattern is, learn how to create and extend patterns, and investigate the translation of a pattern from one medium to another. There are suggestions for 18 Enrichment Boxes to use during the investigation of patterns. Suggestions include boxes with materials for making Playdough patterns, for doing Geoboards experiments with nuts and washers, and for creating patterns with wrapping paper and stickers. A set of blackline masters is included with the teacher guide. (Author/JRS)
