Abstract: Featuring leading scientists and activists, this video focuses on the importance of preserving biodiversity. The tape looks at the historic changes in agriculture and adoption of high yield hybrids, illustrates the impact of the green revolution, examines the importance of maintaining biodiversity, and profiles the growing worldwide network of farmers who are cultivating thousands of rare and threatened species of vegetables and fruits. The tape also describes how seed banks were founded, highlights the story of Soviet botanists who starved to death during a World War II battle rather than eat the seeds they had stored for future generations, and features what has been done to achieve preservation of plant germplasm . A list of books for further reading is provided with the tape. (Author/RA)
